In the meantime, a homicide detective by the name of Fitch is kidnapped and put in a trap where he must rip his fingers off to avoid electrocution in a filling water basin; he also fails to escape and dies. Several years earlier, Fitch had ignored a backup call from Banks, which resulted in him nearly getting killed, and Banks had been responsible for this. Because of his past with Fitch, some of the police start to get the impression that Banks could be the one responsible for this. After after, a package is sent to the station, and inside of it is a pig puppet as well as a portion of Schenk's tattooed skin. A little vial located within the box provides the authorities with directions to a butcher shop, which was once a hobby store and was a frequent hangout for Banks and his father, retired chief Marcus Banks. The group finds a recording recorder and a skinned body that they later determine to be Schenk when they arrive. Marcus, who has made up his mind to find the murderer on his own, goes to a warehouse, where he is promptly kidnapped. Shortly after that, Garza is abducted and held in a trap in the cold storage area of the precinct. There, she is required to cut her spinal chord with a blade in order to stop hot wax from running from a pipe over her face. She is unable to do so, and she succumbs to her injuries caused by the wax that is scorching hot just as Banks finds her corpse.

Who played the leading roles in Spiral?

Tobin Bell, who had portrayed John Kramer / Jigsaw in all of the previous Saw films, did not return in this installment of the franchise. As a result, Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) is the first installment in the series that does not physically involve Bell or show the Jigsaw persona onscreen beyond pictures. Bousman indicated that the murderer in the film is not the original Jigsaw but rather a Jigsaw copycat, and he stated that he had no plans to replace Bell in the famous role of Jigsaw. Bell has said that he would be interested in reprising his role as Jigsaw if the narrative delves more into the history of Billy the Puppet.

The participation of Chris Rock in Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)

Seeing an opportunity to revitalize both the Saw film series and his own career, Chris Rock contacted Lionsgate with the idea for Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021).

According to Chris Rock, the idea for the film Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) came about after he had a chance encounter with the vice chairman of Lionsgate, Michael Burns, at the wedding of a friend in Brazil. Rock felt that doing something in the horror genre would be a new direction for him to take in his career, even though he planned to include some comedic elements in the film. Rock went to Lionsgate with his suggestions for expanding the series, and the company showed a lot of interest in the notion. Rock's approach, according to Joe Drake, CEO of Lionsgate, was fully respectful to the tradition of the material while also reinvigorating the brand with his humor, artistic vision, and enthusiasm for this great horror property. Joe Drake made this statement. By January 2018, industry reports suggested that Lionsgate had began conversations of a ninth Saw film, for which the Spierig Brothers would not be returning. Screen Rant had an interview with the film's makers, and they affirmed that their movie paved the way for future sequels. As of April 2018, Twisted Pictures and the creators of Jigsaw, Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger, were working on the script for a sequel.

How come Tobin Bell wasn't in Spiral?

Spiral: From the Book of Saw was the first Saw film in which Tobin Bell did not reprise his role as Jigsaw.

Despite discussions after the first test screening and through post-production, Stolberg told Bloody Disgusting that Jigsaw was never included in any draft of Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)'s screenplay. They felt that including Jigsaw would alter the story they were trying to tell, not to diminish the character but to move the franchise in a new direction. Stolberg also felt that due to the franchise's timeline, any possible connection John Kramer could have had with William Schenk / The Spiral: From the Book of Saw Killer should have been when the latter was still a child; Stolberg and Goldfinger proposed an after-credits sequence where Kramer met a young Schenk after the murder of the latter's father and bonded with him, possibly giving him the puppet he later uses as the Spiral Killer.

It was decided to replace Billy the Puppet with a new puppet known as Mr. Snuggles because the killer in the film is a Jigsaw imitator who is different from the original. This decision was made because director Darren Bousman felt that if the original Jigsaw was replaced, the original puppet should also be replaced with a new puppet so that the new killer can't be compared to the old one. An early draft actually featured Jigsaw's voice, only to then be revealed a digitally altered version of his voice, and the story originally had all the speeches as actually being past recordings of Jigsaw's voice using words in a different order to show that the Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) Killer had digitally rearranged the words. The production feared that reusing Bell's voice for Mr. Snuggles could have created questions about the relationship between both killers. Deeming Bell's voice as too Finding an alternative actor to play the role of the murderer and replace Bell's was a challenge for the directors. Bousman experimented with a wide variety of voices, including those of men, women, and children, before deciding on the computer-generated voice. The final voice that was used in the movie wasn't chosen until only two days before the sound mix was completed.

Stolberg also clarified that the ninth film will exist in the same canon as the previous eight films and would neither be a reboot or a straight sequel to Jigsaw.

Detective Zeke Banks was played by Rock. The character was created by Rock, Stolberg, and Goldfinger during discussions prior to writing the screenplay, with Rock pondering what he would do if he were the original Saw protagonist Dr. Lawrence Gordon and had to cut off his own foot, until they decided that it would be interesting if Rock played a cop who was shunned by his coworkers.

Out of curiosity, Samuel L. Jackson volunteered to portray Marcus Banks, the chief of the Los Angeles Police Department. He wanted to try something new. As Captain Angie Garza, Marisol Nichols was chosen over a male actor despite being a Saw enthusiast and having chosen to watch David Fincher's Seven instead of the prior films in order to prepare for the part. Initially, Patrick McManus auditioned for the part of Detective Marv Bozwick, but was summoned back to portray Peter Dunleavy while Dan Petronijevic was cast as Bozwick.

Max Minghella, a lover of horror and buddy-cop films, took on the part of William Schenk / The Spiral Killer because he wanted to feature in a movie with straightforward story-telling like 48 Hrs. and Saw.

What kind of reception did the movie Spiral: From the Book of Saw get from reviewers?

On Rotten Tomatoes, 37 percent of 221 reviewers' reviews are favorable, with an average rating of 5.1/10. Spiral (2021)'s critical consensus was that it represents a new path for the Saw series, even if the gruesome aggregate is less than the pieces.

According to a separate film reviewer, the writing captures the grizzled-cop-movie tone and creates some memorable characters, but the narrative is repetitive, the mystery is hopelessly foreseeable, and the inventive deaths are less original site imaginative than before. Spiral chose respectability above entertainment value, and in the process failed to attain either.

Some film reviewers paid praise to the performance and Spiral (2021)'s plain yet captivating idea, but also provided notes to the voice of the unknown murderer, who he thought sounded like Kermit the Frog, and stated that for this movie's genuine audience, the screams and the gore aren't something to be endured. A film critic gave the movie a bad review, saying that Spiral: From the Book of Saw stumbles through its main mystery without any style or thought. Even the traps that kill you are weirdly boring. He said that the movie had potential and that the most frustrating thing about Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) is that there is a better, smarter movie hiding underneath all this nonsense. Too many scenes cut quickly and get faster and faster. It's annoying that bad dialogue is yelled at full volume. In the end, Spiral: From the Book of Saw is a movie about corrupt and even murderous cops who are suddenly called to account. This kind of story has the potential to be both subversive for a Hollywood movie and timely, but Spiral (2021) seems to care so little about any of this that it's almost frustrating. It just wants to kill many people, which it does.
